Yield! by guest bloggist M.J. Johnston

yield sign sdpitbull flickrI grew up in a small town with a traffic circle at one end.  It functioned smoothly until someone who was unfamiliar with the right-of-way rules would enter.  Either the driver would hesitate – hopelessly waiting for someone to stop to allow them in, or they would just drive into the circle thinking they had the right of way.  In both instances, it would cause disruption to the regular flow of traffic.

I was thinking that the simple concept of traffic circles can be analogous to how we operate in life.  A key element is how we view the term, YIELD.  For years, I thought of yielding as a sign of weakness – having to yield to someone or something of higher status or greater strength, usurped by ability to control something.  Having served in numerous leadership positions, yielding wasn’t a trait I tended to cultivate nor was it something I saw as helpful in my progress.  Being bold and aggressive at the traffic circle of life was something at which I excelled.

Of course, in so doing, you cut people off, get others upset, and may create dangerous situations.  While you may be first around the circle, you certainly don’t win friends and influence people.  Further, you may miss wonderful turnoffs along the way since you’re not open to alternatives.

Fortunately, I gained a new perspective on the importance of yielding.  It came as a result of studying Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.  She provides many references describing what we should yield to, but most importantly, it expresses the importance of yielding to God.  Eddy writes, “The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind.”

This enabled me to see that by yielding to God, I don’t abdicate any personal power, but rather, I better align my thinking and actions to be in harmony with God.  By ‘giving way’ to God, I rightfully acknowledge where the power, control, and intelligence really resides.  In so doing, my traffic circle of life flows amazingly smoother – for me and for everyone with whom I come into contact.

This was exemplified in preparing this blog.  I started days ago with the plan to write about a different topic.  I was bound and determined to stick to that topic and went round and round in circles.  Fortunately, I decided to pray about this by simply asking God to lead me.  I listened to an audio chat in which the speaker mentioned that Christian Science healing is not about self-determination, but yielding to God.  By removing self-determination and yielding to God, this topic emerged and within a short time, the blog was completed.  May this simple concept provide you a more harmonious experience in the traffic circles of life!
