New Years Resolutions???

Have you made resolutions for the New Year? I haven’t. I used to, though. With the best intentions I would resolve to eat less, take better care of myself, be a better mother, be a better listener, stay away from chocolate and many, many more issues where I felt I was lacking and wanted desperately to be better.

However, I found that a mere resolving to be better didn’t make me better. Will power was not the way to go. As hard as I tried, failure would occur within a week or two and all resolutions would have been put on the shelf and await for the next New Year.

I was taught early that honest, sincere, heartfelt prayer did accomplish much. Mary Baker Eddy wrote in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds.”

Not the prayer that asks for something, but the prayer that trusts God; the prayer that shows we are willing to humbly let Him show us the way. This kind of prayer brings results.

I remember there was a time when each of my four children let me know I wasn’t listening to them. They gave examples! They said I would begin to listen to what they were saying, but they knew when I would stop paying attention because I would say, “uh-huh,” and my eyes would glaze over.

As one who is used to praying through problems, I began to pray daily to be a better listener. It didn’t happen overnight. It took several months, but I won. I had trusted God to show me the way.

The first step, as the result of prayer, was to enlist the help of my children by asking them to immediately get my attention when the above scenario would occur. The second was humbling – not to be offended or disturbed when I was told I wasn’t listening. The third was to acknowledge that I was a listener – tolet go of the fault I had been hanging on myself – I finally realized that since I had been listening to God as to what steps to take, I, therefore, was able to listen to my children. They have all noticed a difference and are grateful.

There is one resolution we can make – to trust God with our desires – with those issues where we think we are lacking – and He will show us the way if we are listening.
